Asian Handicaps Explained

  • What are Asian Handicaps
  • Examples of types of Asian Handicap

  • Asian Handicap calculator

Asian Handicaps are a relatively new type of bet which are offered mainly on football matches. Asian handicaps are the most prevalent type of bet in the Far East and have become very popular throughout the rest of the gambling industry and are now offered on nearly every football match being played around the world.

For a professional arber they are the lifeblood of your football trading strategy – without using Asian Handicaps it would be very hard to extract a good profit from football betting every month. Therefore, it is essential you clearly understand every type of AH bet and how they can be combined with other bet types to create an arbitrage position.

Brief overview

The Asian Handicap is created so that in theory, each team has a roughly equal chance of winning.

In Asian Handicap betting, the draw is effectively taken out of play and a competitive market formed with 2 picks to choose from. So rather than deciding between home, draw and away, you simply decide which team you think is the best bet on the Asian Handicap they have been given. The handicap is expressed in terms of goal/s or part of a goal start or deficit. A clear difference between European and Asian Handicaps is that certain AH bets can either be refunded or half refunded, depending on the result.

There are various Asian Handicap Calculators available on the internet. To help you learn how this type of handicap bet works depending on result, please refer to our Asian Handicap calculator.

Types of Asian Handicaps Explanation

The main reason Asian Handicaps may appear complicated at first is that they are expressed in many different ways.

The 0.5 Asian Handicap

1.95 (-0.5) Manchester City v Stoke City 2.1 (+0.5)

The first figure 1.95 is the odds available and the figure in brackets is the handicap. This means that Stoke City receive an imaginary half a goal lead at the start of the match (+0.5) so if the match ends with a draw or Stoke City win then you win your bet. If you bet on Manchester City who start half a goal down, they have to win the match for your bet to win. In effect -0.5 Asian handicap is the same as a win single bet

The 0 Asian Handicap

Also known as a ‘Draw-no-bet’ this occurs when the likelihood of either team winning is fairy equal. Here you are really betting without the draw being an option. You win if your selected team wins. If it is a draw, your stake is returned.

The 1 Asian Handicap

If you choose the -1 handicapped selection, your team needs to win by at least 2 clear goals for your bet to win. If your team only wins by one goal then the stake is refunded.

If you select the team who has a +1 handicap then you win if they win or draw. If your team lose by just one goal then stake is refunded. This is a good bet if you fancy an underdog to get a result. Even if you are wrong, if they can limit the defeat to just one goal then you won’t lose a penny.

The 1.5 Asian Handicap

Here, if you bet the -1.5 handicapped team you win if the team wins the match by two or more goals. If you select the team which has a +1.5 handicap then you win if the team wins or draws. You also win if it loses by one goal.

The Split (or double) Asian Handicap Explained

The split Asian handicap is in actual fact 2 separate bets bundled together. Your stake is separated 50/50 and each half is placed on a separate handicap. Once you get your head round it, it is actually quite simple to understand. You may be browsing a bookmaker site and looking at the Asian handicap odds. Usually they will have a number of handicaps to choose from on each match. So you may bet £50 on a -0.5 and £50 on a -1 AH separately. A split Asian handicap allows you to do this in one bet, whilst giving you the same odds for a win. A £100 bet on -0.5, 1 (-0.75) is exactly the same bet in theory as £50 on a -0.5 and £50 on a -1 AH placed separately apart from the fact the odds will be different

The Double Asian Handicap 0.5, 1 (0.75)

Stockport County (-0.5,1) v Exeter City (+0.5,1)

In this example half the stake money is placed on Stockport County minus half a goal and the other half on Stockport County minus 1 goal. The result of the bet is worked out using the methods described above.

If you select the -0.5,1 handicapped team, also referred to as -0.75 then you win if the team wins the match by two or more goals. If it wins by one goal, half your stake is returned and half is a winner at the odds taken.

If you select the opposition +0.5, 1 team, also be known as +0.75 then you win if the team wins or draws the match. If it loses by one goal, you lose 50 per cent of the amount staked.

Often the double Asian handicaps are expressed as decimals. The figure is often the mid-point between the two handicaps. In this example you might there for see –0.75 for Stockport and +0.75 for Exeter City.

Double Handicap 0, 0.5 (0.25)

This is also known as the level half Asian handicap and could be referred to as -0.25 (0,-0.5) and +0.25 (0,+0.5)

If you bet on the team which is 0, -0.5 on the handicap then you win if the team wins by one goal or more. If it draws you lose 50 per cent of your stake. The other half of the stake is returned. Returning of the stake when your bet or part of your bet equals the handicap is also known as a push.

If you select the opposition 0, +0.5 then you win if the team wins the match. If it draws, half your stake is returned and half is a winner at the odds taken.

In reality it is just like having two separate bets. One on 0 handicap and one on 0.5. Both these bets have the same odds.

For example you might have a bet on Chelsea on the -0.25 (-0, 0.5) handicap at odds of 2.25 for £100. Your bet is split into two bets:

£50 on the 0 handicap and £50 on the -0.5 handicap. If Chelsea win then both bets have beaten the handicap so it is £100 x 2.25 returning £225. I f Chelsea Draw then you have equalled the 0 handicap so £50 is pushed but you lose the other £50 as you have failed to beat the handicap on the -0.5 bet.
