The 1X2 or European Handicap bet is settled on the basis that one of the teams is given a goal start, giving it an advantage or disadvantage (depending if the goal is added or subtracted). European Handicaps tend to be offered by the mainstream European bookmakers as it a recreational style bet, which is the sort of customer that these type of bookmakers are looking to attract. They are important to learn for sports arbitrage as you will use a lot of European handicaps in cross market arbs with other bet types.
To help you learn how this type of handicap bet works depending on result, please refer to our European Handicap calculator.
The European Handicap bet has 3 selections, the same as for Win/Draw/Win.
The bookmaker sets this handicap bet for the match:
Arsenal to -1
West Ham +1
To win the bet on Arsenal -1, they must win by at least 2 goals. To win the bet on West Ham +1, the match must end with a draw or West Ham win. To win the bet on Draw-1 then Arsenal must win the game by exactly 1 goal.
This is an important distinction in comparison to Asian Handicaps as Asian Handicaps offer just 2 selections, so it is impossible to win a Asian bet based on an exact score advantage or disadvantage.
European handicaps and sports arbitrage
You will see arbs appear that involve a European handicap bet and an Asian handicap bet combined. The most common example is AH-1.5/EH+2 or EH-1/AH+1.5
European Handicap -1 at 2.1
Asian Handicap +1.5 at 2.05
If the match ends with a draw, a Hull City win or a Manchester United win by one goal only then you win the Asian Handicap bet and if Manchester United win by at least 2 goals then you win the European Handicap bet. This arb is has a total margin of 3.73% profit.
